This past weekend The Mother, The Sister, and I threw a picnic themed shower for my brother and his fiancé.  We called it a wedding shower (instead of the traditional bridal shower) because we wanted to invite both men and women, we are on the groom’s side after all!  Overall it was a great success and now my brother knows just how awkward it is to open gifts in front of people!  🙂

We did a great job making it a family and guy friendly event if I do say so myself, and here’s how:

1) We served meat and LOTS of food.  Typical shower food usually consists of sandwiches and fruit but we grilled brats and hot dogs served alongside mac and cheese and beans.  We borrowed a friend’s lemonade stand to display the beverages which was super cute but also functional, and for dessert The Mother made one of The Glue’s favorites, Dirt Cake. (You’ll have to Google it if you don’t know what I’m talking about!)

2) The invitation asked guests to stock the couple’s kitchen or their bar.  The Glue invited a few guy friends who aren’t married and had no idea what a shower would be like so we wanted to make sure there was an option to bring an easy gift if they didn’t know how or want to search a registry.  It worked out really well and now The Glue and The Tape have some wine, beer, and whiskey to enjoy after their wedding (or before, haha).

3) We skipped the traditional bridal games.  Instead we had Corn Hole/Bags and Ladder Golf for people to play outside!

OK, so we did play one game inside, but it was our own invention and included very little participation from guests.  The happy couple was given fifty one dollar bills to share and a small dry erase board and marker each.  Everyone who attended the shower was asked to write a question on a note card as they entered.  After lunch we sat The Glue and The Tape back to back and read the questions from the note cards.  If they matched answers, they kept the dollar, if they were different, the person who asked the question got the dollar!  We had about 30 people attend and they got a lot of answers correct so they ended up with a nice wad of cash at the end!

Example questions: Who is a better morning person?, How many times a week will The Glue plan on making dinner after you’re married?, and What is The Tape’s favorite book/movie/hobby/color?  Oh and my personal favorite, How many kids will you have?  (Hehe)

The favors were The Mother’s last-minute inspiration that I helped to make!  Unfortunately, The Scottish was called away to help with The Wee One before he could take a photo but this is how they looked except I hand wrote their names and wedding date and I made heart pink.

We also added a magnet strip to the back and put a piece of Ghirardelli chocolate in each clothespin.  It’s the perfect favor for a guest because not only is it a useful magnet but it can also help you remember their wedding date!

And finally because I can’t help over-sharing photos of my kid, how cute is this guy?!?  All dressed up for the shower in an outfit from The Tape and The Glue!

“Who me?!?”

What did you say

It seemed like everyone really enjoyed the shower and we are all so excited for their wedding this coming August!!  🙂
